This year’s Tsumugi Award will be given to internationally renowned composer, arranger, and music producer Akira Senju who has won numerous awards including Japan Academy Prizes for Music. In 2019, one of his works “Utagoe no hibiki” in which he was involved as composer and pianist, was presented to Their Majesties the Emperor and Empress of Japan at Commemoration Ceremony of the Thirtieth Anniversary of His Majesty The Emperor's Accession to the Throne. Takumi Award will be given to Nobuko Nakano who is a neuroscientist, Doctor of Medical Science and cognitive scientist. She is actively engaging in research and publishing books on the subjects of brain and psychology. She published her new book “Onna ni umarete moyatteru !” in June 2019. Her books and talks are acclaimed for shedding light on possible phenomena in human society and people living there from a scientific point of view. Yoichiro Kawaguchi, Artist and Professor Emeritus at the University of Tokyo will serve as a moderator for this conference. He is now holding a solo exhibition “Life in Five Hundred Million Years’ Time Yoichiro Kawaguchi : BEYOND AI” at Taro Okamoto Memorial Museum in Minami-Aoyama, Tokyo. With advances in research on the new technology of expressing human emotions using a computer, the area of expression with CG has been expanding further. In the first half of this conference, Diana Arellano who is ACM SIGGRAPH External Relations Committee Chair will explain “Affective Computing” with the theme of an association between human emotions and computers. She will also introduce CG&VFX she is currently working on at Mackevision, a CGI production in Germany. In the second half, CG/VFX Supervisor for “Amazing Dinoworld,” a popular TV program in Japan, Koji Matsunaga from NHK will talk about CG/VFX production used in “Amazing Dinoworld.” He will introduce activities of NHK’s CG creation team accumulated through its production of TV programs with the difference between now and then in CG production. Based on these two speakers’ lectures, we hold a panel discussion about the way to work on “Emotional Imagery" with CG/VFX, such as emotional expression in CG and an impactful way of video expression. Hideichi Tamegaya will serve as the moderator for this conference. He is a former professor of Joshibi University of Art and Design, who has been involved in CG production and digital techniques from its early stage at NHK and is familiar with the cutting-edge technology trends.

In this seminar, we welcome our guest lecturer Ms. Danielle Belko from Facebook and hear from her about the latest research into VR conducted by her company. Ms. Belko is Emerging-Technologies Chair at SIGGRAPH 2020 where the cutting-edge technologies, which haven’t been put into practical use yet, will be demonstrated and exhibited. We also have a moderator Professor Michitaka Hirose, who is known as the pioneer of VR research in Japan, with us and he gives his update on the ongoing research at the University of Tokyo.
